Welcome to Escondido, California.
Population: 136,000. Settled in a long valley in the coastal mountains of Southern California, Escondido, which means "hidden" in Spanish, lies about 18 miles inland, 100 miles south of Los Angeles, and 30 miles northeast of San Diego. Surrounded by avocado and citrus groves, Escondido is a diverse, vibrant community with just the right mix of small town friendliness and big-city buzz.
Located in a grain-, citrus-fruit-, and grape-growing valley, Escondido produces cereal products and has fruit-packing houses and one of the world's largest avocado processing plants. The city's light industries manufacture pens, musical instruments, electronics, communications equipment, and machine tools. Escondido is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, marked by a population increase of nearly 70% from 1980 to 1990. A wild animal park just south of the city draws numerous tourists to the area. To the east is San Pasqual Battlefield State Monument, commemorating the battle fought in Dec., 1846, between U.S. forces under Gen. Stephen W. Kearny and Californians under Andres Pico.
Escondido which was founded in 1888 during a period when agriculture was its major business and the community had a population of less than 800. Escondido, which means "Hidden Valley", is located in north San Diego County about 25 minutes from the coast and 45 minutes from downtown San Diego. Today the City has become North San Diego County's largest city featuring a diversity of business activity with an extensive retail and manufacturing base. The largest shopping mall in north San Diego County is located in Escondido - The North County Fair featured more than 160 specialty shops, 15 restaurants and five major department stores.
The world famous San Diego Wild Animal Park is south Escondido is an 1,800 acre wild animal preserve featuring a safari monorail, hiking trails and gift shops. During the summer months entertainment is also featured in the evening hours. Indoor fun can be enjoyed at the Iceoplex Ice Center, a $61 million dollar complex which features two Olympic sized ice skating rinks and a full exercise complex. Escondido also has three movie theaters and a fourth within a couple of miles featuring a total of 22 screens. Outdoor recreation includes more than 20 golf courses in the immediate area. Picnic, boating and fishing are available at lakes Dixon, Hodges or Wohlford. You will also find Lake Henshaw and the Turner Dam and Lake close by. Families can enjoy an outing at Kit Carson, Grape Day, Washington or Felicita Parks. Escondido's recreation program is among the finest in the state with youth sports and evening adult recreation leagues using the Kit Carson park complex year round. University of California San Diego, University of San Diego , U.S. International University, San Diego Community Colleges, and Imperial Valley College are all centrally located so everyone in surrounding cities has access to fathering their education. Two local Community Colleges are Palomar College and Cal State University San Marcos. Today, Escondido is a full-service, general-law city with five council members elected at large.
